Pastor Bruce Benson on gay marriage and civil unions
St. Olaf College's preacher/college pastor Bruce Benson had a commentary in last week's StarTribune titled: For sake of civil debate, there's virtue in silence.
I'm afraid that taking my own advice in the following paragraphs will be too difficult for me. I'm a firm believer in what the Bible teaches about homosexuality, but I'm proposing that all Bible believers excuse themselves from further public debate on marriage amendments and same-sex civil unions. Here's why:
I read your article and found it to be an interesting proposal. I wonder what you think about faith based organizatons informing the law to create civil unions that are complementary, exclusive, and committed. While the discussion has focused on the morality of homosexuality, what has been lost is why government would want to promote civil unions. I would submit that government should do so for the benefit of children, not the adults. For those reasons, faith based organizations must speak out, not about homosexuality, but about children and what is best for them. What is best for them is that the law permit their parents, who are willing, to enter into "covenant marriages". Those who are unwilling to enter into coplemenatary, exclusive, and committed relationships, can still enter into the civil unions, which we presently refer to as marriage under the law.
